You’ve probably never heard of Sophie Scholl or the White Rose Resistance Movement and that’s a shame. I have only recently learned of her heroic stand for truth in recent months. Sophie’s bravery in one of the darkest times of history should inspire everyone, especially the next generation. Because at the tender age of just 21, she was willing to speak up for truth and justice, even as she saw the horrors of Nazi Germany slowly seeping into her country's churches. Eventually, it would cost her life.
The Young Activist
Though initially a part of the Nazi Youth Movement, her enthusiasm soon waned when she learned about Hitler's terrifying plans, including his intention to eradicate ethnic Jews, the crippled, and the mentally disabled. She became a core member of the White Rose resistance group. This group of students was driven by Christian beliefs and openly opposed the Nazi regime. They were particularly alarmed by the ways the Nazi party was manipulating and controlling the German churches. Her frustration stemmed from the apparent apathy and lack of action on the part of German Christian who didn’t think it was important to get involved in political matters. She saw this inaction as plain cowardice.
"The real damage is done by those millions who want to 'survive.' The honest men who just want to be left in peace…" - Sophie Scholl
The White Rose
The White Rose bravely printed leaflets filled with powerful words against the Nazi regime, calling upon fellow Germans to stand against the oppression. These leaflets quoted scripture and drew from Biblical principles.
Sophie's youth and determination were inspiring. She and her brother Hans, alongside other members of the White Rose, spread these leaflets throughout the University of Munich and other locations, calling for the end of the regime that was tarnishing Christian values.
Proverbs 31:8-9 says, "Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."
Sophie Scholl embodied this scripture in her actions.
The Arrest and Execution
Tragically, Sophie's commitment to truth led to her capture. On February 18, 1943, she and her brother were arrested after a janitor reported them to the Gestapo. During her trial, she remained unyielding in her convictions:
"Someone, after all, had to make a start. What we wrote and said is also believed by many others. They just don't dare express themselves as we did." - Sophie Scholl
Sophie, her brother Hans, and fellow White Rose member Christoph Probst were sentenced to death. They were beheaded for their “crimes” on February 22, 1943
A Call to Courage
Sophie Scholl's life is a powerful reminder that standing up for what's right, even at a young age, can make a profound impact. Her courage to speak up for her beliefs and the Biblical values she held dear stands as an example for us all.
Are we willing to be brave like Sophie? Are we prepared to stand up for our values, even when it's difficult? May Sophie's example inspire us to preserve the principles we hold dear in our country. We must have the courage to speak, or we risk the loss of the biblical values that have shaped our society.
